34. What can you say about paid higher education in Ukraine? Compare the situation in this country with Great Britain or the USA. How do Ukrainian students cope with their financial problems? What do you think should be done to improve the situation?

Present day independent Ukraine has a well-developed system of education which matches the standards of the developed countries. Pre-school education is not compulsory and is fee-paying. Most parents take their children to nursery schools or kindergartens at the age of 3. Up to the age of 5 children mostly eat, sleep and play there, but in senior groups they are taught the basics of arithmetic, reading, writing, arts and in some schools foreign languages.

Compulsory secondary education begins at the age of 6-7 and is free in state schools and fee-paying in private ones.

Institutions of higher learning (higher educational establishments) include universities, academies, institutes and conservatories. Among the best known higher educational establishments there are Shevchenko Kyiv National University, Kyiv Polytechnic University, International Independent University „Kyiv-Mohyla Academy”, Kyiv State Conservatory, Lviv State University, Kharkiv National University, Kharkiv National Pedagogical University, Kharkiv State Polytechnic University and many others.

There are also many schools which the State doesn’t control. They are private schools. They charge fees for educating children and many of them are boarding schools, at which pupils live during the term time.

Students studying under the contract is very difficult. Most of them work at work and study at the same time. Today, the tuition fee is a fairly large amount of money. Some children choose a profession not by vocation, but by the amount of money they need to pay each year. most parents can not afford to pay for their children.

In the Great Britain only 45 per cent continue with full-time education after 16. The rest go to work or join employment training schemes.

The Americans place a high value on education. The National Government gives no direct financial aid to the institutions of higher education. Students must pay a tuition fee. This creates a financial hardship for some people.

Many students have to work to pay their expenses. That’s why Kennedy said -Our progress as a nation can be no swifter than our progress in education.

I think there should be more government jobs at the university in order to improve the situation in the country. If tuition is payable, then the best conditions for students will be created. After all, students pay not a small amount of money.
