compound sentence

is a multiple sentence that consists of two or more clauses coordinated with each other. Clauses combined by means of coordination are regarded as independent: they are linked in such a way that there is no hierarchy in the syntactic relationship; they have the same syntactic status.

     Each part of the compound sentence is pronounced with the falling tone. The clauses of the compound sentence are linked either asyndetically or by means of conjunctions (or adverbs):

  1. copulative (соединительные): and, not only... but (also), neither… nor;
  2. disjunctive (разделительные): or, otherwise, or else, either … or;
  3. adversative (противительные): but, while, whereas, whilst [fml, old use],yet, still, nevertheless, however, only [infml];
  4. causative-consecutive (причинно-следственные): for; consequently, therefore, hence [fml], then, so [infml], thus [fml], accordingly.
