Adam Lindsay Gordon (19 October 1833 – 24 June 1870)[1] was an Australian poet, jockey and politician.
Gordon was born on the island of Faial (Azores) in the family of Captain Adam Durnforda Gordon (born. Adam Durnford Gordon), who was married to his cousin, Harriet Gordon (Eng. Harriet Gordon). Childhood Gordon held on the island of Madeira, and then in the UK, where the family lived until 1840 in Cheltenham. After studying for several years in the local school, in 1848 he entered the Royal Military Academy in London (Engl. Royal Military Academy, Woolwich). There he made friends with his namesake Charles Gordon, later famous British captain. Despite the successes in sports, Gordon dropped out of school failure and misconduct. He was forced to return to Cheltemskuyu school, where he studied until 1852. In 1953, Gordon's father decides to send his son to Australia, where Adam and leaving August 7, 1853.
In Australia, Gordon settled in Adelaide. He was enrolled in the ranks of the mounted police. 4 November 1855 he resigned from the police force and devoted himself to studies dressage in South Australia. In 1857, Gordon's father died, and two years later his mother. By 1860, Gordon earned a reputation as a good rider. October 20, 1862, he married a girl of seventeen Margaret Park (Eng. Margaret Park).
In 1864, Gordon wrote his first poem «The Feud». In 1865 he became a member of the Parliament of South Australia (English. South Australian House of Assembly), having left his post in 1866. All this time he has not stopped writing poems, which were published in magazines Victoria «Australasian» and «Bell's Life». In 1867 came «Ashtaroth, a Dramatic Lyric» and «Sea Spray and Smoke Drift». Do not get the recognition of his poetic talent in Melbourne, Gordon decides to settle in Victoria. May 3, 1867 Gordon had a daughter, who died at the age of 11 months. At the same time he developed financial problems began to rapidly progressing nearsightedness. All this led to depression. Continuing to participate in tournaments, Gordon managed to somewhat improve their situation. However, March 12, 1870 he is a very bad fall from his horse, he suffered a serious head injury. From the wounds, he never recovered. June 23 the same year he published his latest book - «Bush Ballads and Galloping Rhymes». A particular success it did not use, but modern experts consider it the most important work of Australian literature. The magazine «Australasian» was published a positive review of the book. Realizing that he had nothing to pay with the publisher of the book, Adam Gordon was shot in the early morning June 24, 1870 at his home in Victoria. He was buried at the cemetery Brighton [1].
