17. The status and semantics of modal verbs in English (can, may, must, to have to, to be to, need, ought to, should, shall, will, dare). Their morphological features.

Can = to be able to - expresses ability, possibility etc.

May = to be allowed, to be permitted - expresses permission, possibility etc.

Must = to have to, to be obligated to - obligation, necessity, supposition etc.

Should + bare inf = ought to + bare inf - obligation or duty, smt advice

To be + inf = modal verbs of obligation - order, arrangement, possibility. Used only in Present and Past Simple

Shall - promise, order, futurity

Will - volition, insistence, futurity

Dare + indefinite inf- means "to have the courage to do something". Mostly used in interrogative and negative sentences
