5. Characteristics of inflectional and derivational morphemes.

Morphemes, which are used as means of word building and don't indicate grammatical relations are called derivational morphemes. The function of derivational morpheme is to build up words.

The opposition to this is the inflectional morpheme( word changing). They are used as means of showing grammatical relations between words. The main function is to connect notional words. The member of inflection morphemes in English is rather limited:

  • -s (plural noun)
  • -s (third person singular of the verb)
  • -'s or -s' (noun genitive case)
  • -ed (verb past)
  • -ed (past participle)
  • -ing (present participle or gerund)
  • -er or -est (the forms of comparing degrees of adj)
  • -en (plural forms)
