5. General assembly

The General Assembly is the chief deliberative organ of the United Nations. It represents all the member States of the UN, each of which has one vote. Decisions on important issues, such as peace and security, are taken by a two-thirds majority. Decisions on other matters shall be taken by a simple majority. The first session was on 10 January 1946 in Westministre Central Hall in London and include representatives of 51 nations.

  • Makes recommendations to the UN membership in its bodies;
  • Considers any matters relating to the maintenance of peace.
  • Forms organs of the United Nations, receives from them reports on their activities.
