In unreal conditionals both the condition and the consequence usually refer to the same time [3; 9; 11; 17; 18]:
E.g. If I were you, I would do the same. (На твоем месте я бы сделал то же самое) /i.e. both the condition and the consequence refer to the present/future/
E.g. If I had followed your advice, I wouldn’t have broken my leg. (Если бы я воспользовался твоим советом, я не сломал бы ногу) /i.e. both the condition and the consequence refer to the past/
However, there are two mixed types of unreal condition, if the condition and the consequence refer to different time [3; 9; 19]:
- The condition refers to the past while the consequence refers to the present/future:
E.g. If you hadn’t been so rude to her yesterday, you wouldn’t feel guilty now. (Если бы ты не был с ней так груб вчера, ты не чувствовал бы себя виноватым сегодня)
E.g. If she had made her thesis properly yesterday, she would get a better mark today. (Если бы она как следует подготовила конспект, она получила бы сегодня более высокую оценку)
- The condition refers to no particular time while the unrealized consequence refers to the past:
E.g. If he were not so absent-minded, he wouldn’t have mistaken you for your sister. (Если бы он не был таким рассеянным, он не принял бы Вас за Вашу сестру)
E.g. If you were less emotional, your presentation would have looked more professional. (Если бы ты была менее эмоциональной, твое выступление выглядело бы более профессионально)
