31. A compound sentence

contains two independent clauses joined by a coordinator. The coordinators are as follows: for, and, nor, but, or, yet, so. (Helpful hint: The first letter of each of the coordinators spells FANBOYS.) Except for very short sentences, coordinators are always preceded by a comma. A sentence that contains at least two independent clauses.

Compound sentences can be formed in three ways:

(1) using coordinating conjunctions (and, but, for, nor, or, so, yet);

(2) using the semicolon, either with or without conjunctive adverbs;

(3) on occasion, using the colon.

The compound sentence is one of the four basic sentence structures. The other structures are the simple sentence, the complex sentence, and the compound-complex sentence.
