Lexical and semantic sets. Mismatches of the semantic structures of words in the compared languages.

Lexical set

  • A lexical set is a group of words with the same topic, function or form.

Example
'Cat, dog, tortoise, goldfish, gerbil' is part of the topical lexical set pets, and 'quickly, happily, completely, dramatically, angrily' is part of the syntactic lexical set adverbs.

Semantic set = semantic field

  • A set of words (or lexemes) related in meaning. Defined more specifically semantic field is "a set of lexemes which cover a certain conceptual domain and which bear certain relations to one another".

Example
The words in a semantic field share a common semantic property. Most often, fields are defined by subject matter, such as body parts, landforms, diseases, colors, foods, or kinship relations, etc.

ИЛИ ЖЕ

2) Вот ещё вариант: здесь нужно разобрать семантические поля двух слов, как учила Велта, например «field» и «поле».

FIELD

ПОЛЕ

1) Land on a farm (for animals and crops)

a) безлесная равнина, пространство

2) any open aria

b) обрабатываемая под посев земля, участок земли

3) a branch of knowledge or activity

c) большая ровная площадка

4) the place where practical operations happen

d) работы, исследовательская деятельность в природных естественных условиях

5) the place where the force is felt

e) пространство, в пределах которого проявляется действие каких-либо сил

6) all the people taking part in a hunt

f) область деятельности, поприще

7) all the horses in the race

g) основной цвет, фон под узором

8) the part on the surface of a coin or flag that is not a pattern

h) чистая полоса вдоль края листа (в мн.ч.)

-

i) край шляпы (в мн.ч.)

Совпадения (matches) – жирным шрифтом: 4d, 5e, 8g;
Частичные совпадения (partial matches):  1a, 1b, 2c, 3f, 8g;
Уникальные значения (unique meanings) – курсивом: 6, 7 и h, i.

1.Semantic gaps

= foreign words, realia, proper names, terms, neologisms, allocutions and onomatopoetic words

1.1. Foreign words or word-combinations in a foreign spelling that are introduced into a text in their original form - without morphological or syntactic changes. In oral speech they retain their initial pronunciation.
Why are they used: 1) author is trying to create a specific national atmosphere (это любил делать Хемингуэй в "Старике и море" (мой): "Вот уже второй день, как я ничего не знаю о результатах juegos, - подумал он" (исп. "спортивные игры"); 2) it is an attempt to achieve special stylistic (comic or ironic) effect (Льюис Кэррол «Алиса в стране чудес»: «…Besides, if I’m only a sort of thing in his dream, what are you, I should like to know? – Ditto, - said Tweedledum. – Ditto, ditto! – cried Tweedledee». “Ditto” – то же самое (лат.) мой пример).

When translating such fragments the best way to cope with the translation is to preserve these words in the target text and to give a footnote or a commentary.

  • О комментариях по Тер-Минасовой: в качестве пояснения могут приводиться данные энциклопедического характера, и он может быть условно назван энциклопедическим. Исследовательский комментарий реалий, включающий в себя данные энциклопедического комментария, должен иметь характер 1) лингвострановеческий (национальные особенности восприятия внеязыкового фактора раскрывает) и 2) контекстуально-ориентированный (указывает на роль этого фактора в данном произведении). Пример (мой) - комментарий к сказке Оскара Уайльда "Счастливый Принц": the Palace of Sans-Souci - sans souci (фр.) - беззаботный. Сан-Суси - великолепный дворец в стиле барокко, построенный в 1747 году в Потсдаме прусским королём Фридрихом, которого называли философом Сан-Суси.
"Беззаботные дети" (Enfants Sans Souci) - труппа актёров, существовавшая в средние века во Франции и ставивша злободневные сатирические комедии. Без сомнения, Оскару Уайльду были известны эти факты, и они повлияли на какие-то отдельные моменты в его работе над этой сказкой.

1.2. Realia are facts and phenomena in the extralinguistic world of experience which are specific to a given national culture, but missing from another culture or at least are not fully identical.
Реалии - это понятия, относящиеся к жизни, быту, истории, традициям, материальной и духовной культуре данного народа (по Бреусу).
In translation these cases require notional compensation - the use of special devices ensuring the same content to be conveyed by means of another language as precisely as possible including various ways of how 'semantic gapes' can be 'bridged'. The devices of transliteration/transcription as well as calques are most often used in translation and contrastive analysis for the sake of precision.

ерWhen transliteration is used the word is rendered into another language at the level of orthography (здесь и дальше примеры по учебнику): summit / саммит.
Transcription is realized at the level of phonemes: impeachment / импичмент.
Calques present literal word-for-word translation when morpheme components or word-like elements are replaced by the direct lexical equivalents: hyperlink / гиперссылка.

In translation of terms and neologisms the leading role belongs to material borrowings: file / файл (transcription), mobile phone / мобильный телефон (calque). A descriptive translation is also used especially when the meaning of term should be explained: franchising / особый контракт, выдача компанией лицензии на производство или продажу товара под её маркой.

Redistribution of semantic components and specification of the word's denotation are the most common ways of realizing notional compensation. As a result, descriptive translation is produced. Пример от балды: Жёны декабристов не оставили своих мужей в сибирском изгнании (ололо). Decembrists' (dekabrists' более уместный вариант конкретно для примера, но возможны оба) wives didn't leave their husbands when they were sent to Siberia as that was a common punishment of those years. Декабристы сохранены как вариант калькой, про наказание тех лет - addition of extra information, чтобы понятно было, что это за фишка со ссылками, которую так любят в России.

Аналоговый или приближённый перевод возможен ещё, пример из учебника,  но идоизменён: Он был старый фронтовик. He was an old front-line soldier. The analogue here is motivated by the definition of the original word - "участник войны, воевавший на передней линии фронта".

The above techniques of adjustment help to preserve national colouring of the original, but they may also damage everything when used improperly. Beware of that shit, babe, don't add to much stuff to your target text (примера нет, соррьки, только в учебнике на стр. 169 внизу).

Semantic gaps can also occur when dealing with proper names that carry some referentional meaning due to their inner structure - в русском языка это "говорящие имена", к примеру. Motivated names can be rendered with the help of units of the target text, at least partially, пример от балды: Mrs.Tosh - Госпожа Чушь, (из учебника) Mr. Chatterbox - Господин Таратор.

Есть ещё вариант переводить через generalizing transformation (генерализация как вид трансформационного перевода). Пример снова из стратосферы: He's a fan of Rex Stout and Agatha Christie. Он поклонник детективного жанра в литературе.

1.3. Allocutions are closely related to proper names as they are added to personal names in various forms of address. So there is no equivalent in Russian for the word (учебник) 'Ms.' (used to address a woman irrespective to her marital status). У нас это "госпожа". (Мой) В английском же нет "гражданина", но есть 'Mr.', наверное.

1.4. Onomatopoetic words define sounds. Sound systems in English and Russian differ and so do the ideas of euphony. So it is inevitable that some words imitating sounds will not have adequate equivalents in the target language. (Мои) Поросёночек говорит 'oink-oink', у нас - "хрю-хрю". Собачка говорит 'bow-wow', а у нас "гав-гав".

Even more perplexing are onomatopoetic neologisms created by writers on their own. Из стратосферы: And then they started singing at once: Shala-la-la... И тогда они запели все разом: Ла-ла-ла-ла… Потому что у нас как-то "шалала" не очень.

2. Lexical gaps (lacunae)

2.1. The issue of lexical semantic segmentation
Lexical gaps occur when units of the source language have no equivalents in the vocabulary of the receptor language.  For instance, English noun compounds are often treated as potential lexical gaps since they are commonly rendered into Russian descriptively: (учебник ‘glimpse’ – «беглый  взгляд»).
There is a decisive difference between realia (referential gap) and lexical gap (лексические лакуны): realia stand for concepts of life of a given national community, which are not shared by another national community; lexical gaps are determined by peculiarities of semantic segmentation  - lexical division of the semantic-conceptual space to a given language. By semantic structure we understand the way language segments reality.  Пример из учебника: в английском нет аналога слова «сутки», чтобы сказать «Я приеду через сутки», они говорят : «I’ll come in 24 hours».

The idiom principle specifies how languages bring their units in correspondence with objects of reality and turn them into codes ‘to break’ which requires a special knowledge.

Phrases or collocations invariably reveal cultural attitudes. Пример из учебника от нашей Ашхен: ‘No entry’ в Англии = «Посторонним вход воспрещён» в России, но выражено это совершенно иначе, модальность другая, все дела.

2.2. Linguistic relativity

Colour terms

Far reaching distinction between languages with regard to semantic segmentation of particular referential areas have fostered the idea of language autonomy in determining our conception of the world, which has come to be known as the concept of linguistic relativity.  A classical example of linguistic relativity are colour terms.
Colour terms
is a fascinating but difficult subject to communicate about. Colours are traditionally source of confusion in language.

3. Associative gaps

Associations that cling to the word’s denotative meaning may become so strong that it realizes up in a change of its semantic structure. A lexical item then acquires a cultural component that is implicitly contained in the overall background knowledge of language users.
Associative gaps can be considered as part of pragmatically non-equivalent vocabulary. Но иногда ассоциации со словами совпадают (учебник): собака (‘dog’) – четвероногий друг человека у англичан и русских, а фикус (‘aspidistra’)  – символ буржуазного стиля жизни.
There appear not only semantic coincidences (выше примеры) in compared languages, but pragmatic coincidences also (учебник): «подмаслить» - ‘to butter up’, «соль земли» - ‘the salt of the Earth’, «приносить плоды» - ‘to bear fruit’.
However there are a great number of pragmatic mismatches (учебник): «берёза» для русских – символ самой русской природы, но английское ‘birch-tree’ мало что говорит англичанам о России, английское же ‘mistletoe’ («омела») нам знакомо по фильмам, но реально ничего для нас не значит.
Thus we may conclude that in lexical confrontation denotative, stylistic and pragmatic meanings run parallel.
