Shortening is the creation of a new word by subtraction from a full word. Shortening is represented by clipping and abbreviation. Clipping is the formation of a word by cutting off one or several syllables of a word. There are three main types of clipping according to the position of a clipped part (apocope, syncope, aphesis, or apheresis).
